The historic city on the coast of the Baltic Sea

Gdańsk was the setting for the most important events of our country in the twentieth century. The proximity of the sea makes the city a great resort for lovers of sunbathing. The historical centre makes a holiday in the Tri-City becoming a great adventure for those who love sightseeing. Welcome to Gdansk! Tri-City is one of the most attractive and the most popular holiday destination on the Baltic Sea.

Apart from the beautiful sandy beaches, Tri-City will appeal to tourists in love with sightseeing. The heart of the Tri-City enrolled in a thick line in the Polish history. It is here where on September 1-st, 1939 the Polish Post Office building was defended heroically, and up to September 7-th Westerplatte peninsula was besieged. Both places have become a symbol of the struggle of Poles with Nazi aggression.

A few decades later Gdańsk became the scene of opposition to the communist authorities. On August 14-th, 1980, in the Gdansk Shipyard the strike began, and its leader was Lech Walesa, former President of the Third Republic. Humble worker, who was not let to workon the day of the protest, jumped over the wall and to join the colleagues. Soon, the „Solidarność” had about 10 million members. To be closer to the memories of those events, it is important to go to Kościołśw. Brygidy (St. Brigid’s Church) important for strikers and to front of shipbuilding Gate No. 2 and see PomnikPoległychStoczniowców (Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers).

The historic centre…

The historic attractions of Gdansk are primarily the old town buildings especially Długa street and DługiTarg. The most interesting entrance to the Old Town is through BramaWyżynna, next to which in the Katownia there is the MuzeumBursztynu (Museum of Amber). Lovers of beautifully solidified resin can also go to Świętojańska street which is parallel to Długa street and DługiTarg, and where there is a lot of stalls with amber. Going further towards the Motława river, we pass ZłotaBrama (the Golden Gate), DwórBractwaśw. Jerzego and TargWęglowy (Coal Market) where famous Dominican Fair takes place in August. Guides from Gdansk walk with tourists farther towards DługiTarg, passing the MuzeumWnętrz (Museum of Design in Uphagen House), Ratusz (City Hall) and FontannaNeptuna (the Neptune Fountain).

The fountain, which once was visited by the sailors after coming ashore, to thank for the happy return home, is now a symbol of the city. Promenade by the Motława river is a well-known element of Gdansk landscape, there we will find such attractions of Gdansk like: Żuraw, historic ship „Sołdek”, ZielonaBrama and BramaMariacka.
